I know all of us have things to be grateful for in our lives. In random order (in fact, there is no order because each and everything listed below is equally important to me), here are the ten things that I am grateful for:
1. TO BE ALIVE
This is the absolute fundamental thing I am grateful for. I didn’t used to think of it like this until I realised just how lucky I am to be alive. I am sure many of us would only realise this when we expereinced a near-death experience. But why must we only experience something so dramatic before we can appreciate the treasure of life and living?
2. TO HAVE ALL THE BASIC NECESSITIES IN LIFE
I do not have to worry about the weather out there when I sleep at night because I have a roof over my head and I have a home to go to everyday. In addition, I also live in a safe environment, have clean water to use and enough food on the table to keep me going everyday.
3. ALL THE LOVE IN LIFE
I am surrounded by love… I am loved by my family, my husband, friends and even sometimes strangers out there who show love just by being kind to me. For instance, many years ago, I was driving an old car which required fortnightly top-up of oil (due to a leak that couldn’t be repaired). Guess what – a mechanic at a local garage showed such kindness that I could never repay – he helped to top up the oil for me fortnightly for free for two years (until I scrapped the car)!
4. MY OVERALL REASONABLE GOOD HEALTH
I am reasonably healthy – I can walk, run and basically be mobile. I have psoriasis and it is annoying… but at least it is not life-threatening like some other more grave illnesses.
5. ALL THE OPPORTUNITIES I HAVE BEEN GIVEN
I feel so fortunate to have had opportunities knocking on my door every now and then. Be it in my career or in other aspects of my life, I cannot say that I am short of opportunities. For that, I am very thankful.
6. ALL THE CHALLENGES THAT HAVE COME MY WAY
Like opportunities, I have also had my share of challenges to overcome in life. Things could get tough during those challenging times. However all the challenges that I have gone through were the very things that enabled me to learn and grow. Without any challenges in life, I doubt I would be where I am today. In fact, npowadays when I look back I tend to see those challenges more as opportunities.
7. THE ABILITY TO THINK AND MAKE CHOICES
I am glad to have a sound mind to think and make choices for myself. This is something that I don’t usually think about but truly, without that ability, life would have felt meaningless.
8. MODERN TECHNOLOGY
The wonder of technology! Gosh, I am so lucky to be living in this era! The internet, television, cars, modern kitchen, etc… The world has evolved so much since the Paleolitic Age. With modern technology, more and more opportunities are available to all of us these days. I am definitely grateful for it.
9. SIMPLE THINGS IN LIFE
Sometimes I feel that this is the one thing that I tend to take for granted a lot. I am learning now to stop and appreciate these simple, little things that I have the luxury to enjoy – coffee in the morning, blossoming beautiful flowers outside the apartment, the smell of rain on some days… These are the little things in life where one needs to be present to truly appreciate them.
10. EVERYTHING I HAVE IN LIFE
Well, what can I say? I am indeed grateful for everything that I have in my life yesterday, today and tomorrow. And I hope that you are, too!
