I often hear a lot about the morning ritual that a lot of successful people follow in their daily lives. Evening or before bedtime ritual is not as common. Nevertheless, it does not mean that there isn’t one. It is just not highlighted as much. Most successful people do have a before bedtime routine. I can easily point out a few successful entrepreneurs or CEOs who do adopt a daily before bedtime routine and I will share with you the details below.
Now, at the end of the day, after a long day at work, what are the most common 5 things successful people do before sleeping?
1. CHECK CALENDAR FOR THE NEXT DAY TO PREPARE YOURSELF MENTALLY
Before actually heading to bed (or bedroom for that matter), it is highly recommended that you spend about 10-15 minutes checking what is in your diary for the next day. You want to be sure that you know exactly what to expect the next day so you are not caught off guard by the work you need to do the next day. By checking your diary, it psychologically prepares you mentally and you will feel less anxiety about all the tasks ahead. This way, you can be assured of a good night’s sleep as you will wake up next day knowing that you have already psyched yourself up the night before and thus, ready to jump start your day.
2. LAY OUT ALL THE CLOTHES AND THINGS REQUIRED FOR THE NEXT DAY
Prepare and lay out everything for the next day down to the socks or underwear you are planning to wear! This is crucial as I know there are a lot of people who always get panicky in the morning and waste time searching and fumbling for what they want to wear before heading out. This causes unnecessary anxiety and temper can flare due to this. That is the last thing we want to have happen… So, lay everything out and if you are a gym-goer, lay out all your gym gear as well. This guarantees a calm morning and you will get to enjoy your morning coffee/tea before you head out.
3. TURN OFF PHONE
Just as you are heading to bed, remember to turn off your phone and do not touch it afterwards until the next morning! You want, and need a good night’s sleep. While that might be the absolute last thing Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook does before she turns out in the evening, it does not matter as what matters is she still does it nevertheless. It is important to sleep throughout the night without any disruption as when you are well rested at night, you will be more productive the next day.
4. WIND DOWN AND READ A BOOK FOR AT LEAST 20 MINUTES
Try not to think about work by this time. You have done your part in the daytime and you deserve a break. Bill Gates spends up to an hour reading every night as part of his before bedtime ritual. He claims that it is part of his falling asleep process. What is important here is you are reading ideally from a non-electronic device’s book. Give your eyes a rest. Read an actual book or magazine or any printed articles. Just read and wind down… and you might even fall asleep thereafter, in which case you can ignore #5.
Some people like to mediate after a short bedtime reading. Some people meditate, then read and some people meditate instead of reading. It is entirely up to you. Anyway, meditation is proven to be a very calming and helpful method for helping people to sleep. Oprah Winfrey for one, meditates by writing in her gratitude journal before sleeping. I personally like this and am slowly adopting this into my nightly routine. It just feels good to doze off with positive thoughts in mind. I find that it made my sleep deeper and I would also wake up feeling refreshed and positive 🙂
